The day began with a wild trip to the Medina market to pick up fresh ingredients—truly the most chaotic grocery shopping of my life, complete with sensory overload! Men were calling out across the crowds, people jostled through narrow lanes, and the symphony of smells and sounds created a memory I’ll always carry with me. Thankfully, my host Nabil guided me through it all and handled the transactions with ease.After the Medina, we stopped at an olive shop and then a goat farm, where I picked up kiln-cooked “special bread,” before heading to Nabil’s home. There, his wife welcomed me with a light Tunisian breakfast that set the tone for the rest of the day.Next, I prepared two starters—Khlef and Brik—and a main dish of couscous with chicken. Everything was fresh and lovingly made by hand, from chopped herbs to ground peppercorns. Even the tea leaves were washed and brewed from scratch.I ended the meal with a spread of fresh fruit, traditional pastries, and mint tea served in their beautiful backyard. The flavors and dishes I experienced were ones I never would have discovered without this class.More than just a cooking lesson, it felt like being welcomed into someone’s home and culture. Nabil and his family went above and beyond to make the day special. Herr Nabil war so schön, holte uns pünktlich von unserem Hotel ab, brachte uns ins Stadtzentrum (madina) und zeigte uns die verschiedenen Teile des Marktes, gab uns einige historische Fakten über den Ort dabei und lehrte uns über die Bedeutung jedes Wahrzeichens. . Er gab uns sogar Empfehlungen für lokale Sehenswürdigkeiten und bot an, uns dorthin zu bringen. Wir wurden zum lokalen Lebensmittelmarkt gebracht, wo wir die Zutaten für das Essen bekamen, das wir kochen wollten. Auf dem Rückweg ging er sogar darüber hinaus, um uns die volle Erfahrung zu geben, alle lokalen Köstlichkeiten zu probieren und sogar um den Preis in einem lokalen Geschäft zu feilschen, als wir anhielten, um ein paar Souvenirs zu kaufen. Zu Hause stellten Herr Nabil und seine Frau einen schönen Tisch für uns und sorgten dafür, dass wir uns wohl fühlten. Das Kocherlebnis war erstaunlich, wir lernten die verschiedenen Gerichte kennen und wie man sie zubereitet. Sie waren wirklich geduldig und freundlich, wie sie uns beibrachten, wie man in ihrem schönen Haus kocht. Da mein Freund Geburtstag hatte, haben sie sogar spezielle Fruchttorten für uns gemacht, um den Anlass zu feiern. Alles in allem ist es eine ausgezeichnete Möglichkeit, mit den Einheimischen in Kontakt zu treten und mehr über ihre Speisen und Kultur zu erfahren.
